Pennyfields was created in Beijing with a mix of British and Chinese co-founders. We named ourselves after the site of the original Chinatown in London. A cultural melting pot, where eastern & western values have blended together since 1890, something we continue to do today with our brand campaigns & creative ideas.
In the early 1890s the Chinese community in the East End grew in size & spread eastwards, from the original settlement in Limehouse Causeway. Becoming known as London's Chinatown, the shops of Pennyfields were transformed into Chinese emporia & their colourful interiors became an exotic contrast to the grey streets of Poplar.
There was no local Chinese newspaper at the time but notice sheets of news from China were often pasted to the walls in Pennyfields. Cafes, shops & lodging houses were places to meet, exchange news & gossip. This early form of cross cultural engagement between Chinese & western societies is what forms our inspiration today.
